Blogmas Day 7: Battle of the Dairy-free Coffee Creamers

For my fellow coffee drinkers out there, I don’t know how you take your coffee but if I had my way I’d take my black but with a large pour of half and half or heavy cream if I let myself buy it. That being said, I’ve read all the research and a handful of diet books to know that I should be avoiding cows milk as much as possible, especially into adulthood. I’m going to stop that science talk there simply because it’s not worth the debate and that opinion is entirely my own.

So, in order to spice up and motivate me to move to a dairy-free alternative I thought I would do a little research to find the best options on the market. I purchased these at Whole Foods but I’ve seen a few of them at local grocery stores and on Amazon. I will rank my favorites along with prices and where to find them!

My Favorite: Malk Organic Maple Oat Pecan Milk

Price: $3.49

I’ve had my eye on this creamer for quite some time but it can be hard to find. You can occasionally find it at Whole Foods or other specialty markets. This creamer froths pretty well and has a delightful Christmas oatmeal flavor. I’d relate this one to your bowl of maple oatmeal but in a good way without that mushy texture! I would definitely buy this one again! The only con to this one is it can be difficult to find.

#2: Oat Barista Blend

Price: $4.29

Notice a trend here? If I’m going to choose a dairy free milk option I am going to choose one with an oat base. To me, oat milk has the closest texture and flavor to real dairy. I’ve heard great things about this creamer from other gals on Instagram and I had to try it. This one does not disappoint especially when it is frothed. It froths better than the Malk brand and is a good option if you only want a creamy flavor in your coffee, similar to regular milk or half and half.

#3. Califia Farms Better Half

Price: $3.49

This “half and half” look alike is a blend of unsweetened almond milk and coconut cream. I was definitely hustled by the product packaging on this one. I figured I had to try what claimed to be closest to my usual half and half in my coffee but you can still taste the almond milk in this one and the texture is pretty thin, almost watery. To me, it doesn’t add much to my coffee. I wouldn’t get this one again and believe there are much better options out there!

  1. I’ve heard a lot of creamers out there are really just full of sugar and saturated fat, and there are people that say including a creamer daily in your coffee is not great. Have any of the non-dairy options you tried appeared to have higher nutritional value? Also, are protein creamers a thing??? like instead of a protein shake in the morning can you just throw some in your coffee?

    1. I always try to watch the sugars in my creamers because not only are they bad for you but they leave me with a sugar high/hangover which I don’t like. Everyone of the creamers I tried are either unsweetened or use natural sweeteners. I have heard of protein coffee as a big trend right now and have thought about trying it. You have to be careful putting some proteins in hot liquids because they’ll clump up like crazy. I heard a brand called Phormula One does well in coffee but haven’t tried it myself yet!


  2. I agree with you that oat milk is a great alternative to cow’s milk and, at least for me, pretty much the only one I don’t just tolerate, but actually enjoy in my coffee.
    Fortunately, plant based milk alternatives have gotten rather popular in Germany over the past few years so that you can now buy one liter of store brand milk for just a bit over a dollar! My favorite, by far, is from a German supermarket chain called ‘Kaufland’.
