Blogmas Day 20: “Healthy” Holiday Drinks from Starbucks

Well folks we are officially 5 days out from Christmas! Somehow, I am just now realizing this at 10:20 pm too. I don’t know about you but I’m feeling a little fluffier than usual from my usual lack of judgement and control between Thanksgiving food and Christmas treats. I am feeling the pressure to make healthy choices while still enjoying this magical, and delicious time of year.

I don’t know about you but when those Starbucks Christmas cups come out I go running for their specialty lattes. Sadly, those drinks can come in at the density of an entire meal if you’re not careful and can somehow leave you with not only a slight caffeine high but a sugar hangover as well. This year I tasked myself with testing my favorite lower calorie and lower sugar options of our tried and true Christmas coffee favorites!

Let’s start with the lowest calorie option! The credit goes to my sister on this one because she is following the keto diet on this one and a college student too. So, this guy has a bit of Christmas and a whole lot of caffeine for whatever you need to get through this season, whether its finals or smashing out wrapping presents. She ordered a Grande Blonde Holiday Roast with cream and a shot of espresso! This guy should ring in around 75 calories or less depending on how much cream you put in. It is not sweet but creamy and with plenty of a coffee kick.

Next up, I tried the same adjustment to two of my favorite holiday lattes. I made the same adjustment to each and cut around 150 calories! The best way to shape up your latte order is to swap out the milk for one of Starbucks nut milks. I prefer coconut milk but you can go with almond milk too if that is your preference! From there, it’s all about taming the syrups in your latte. For a Grande I usually shoot for around 2 pumps of syrup and that does it for me! For example, I ordered a Grande Caramel Brulee Latte with coconut milk and only two pumps of syrup! I used the same method for the Chestnut Praline Latte too. I honestly don’t notice much of a difference when making these swaps!

Lastly, the Peppermint Mocha can tend to pack a lot more calories than other lattes because they use a combination of syrups. If I find myself tempted by one of these puppies I like to take one pump of each syrup and add it to a regular drip coffee! I will admit, this one tastes the least like the original but you still get some of that great peppermint mocha flavor. This one can be ordered as a Grande coffee with one pump of mocha and one pump of peppermint.

At the end of the day though, I would be lying if I haven’t had a full strength regular holiday latte. Christmas is a time for enjoying yourself, celebrating life, and relaxing! If you really want that latte, by all means treat yourself! By the time we get to December, most of us have put in a long hard year at work and one all out latte isn’t going to wreck your life or your waistline!
